How To Throw A Football-Themed Birthday Party

How to Throw a Football-Themed Birthday Party for a 1-Year-Old: "First Year Down"
Celebrating your baby’s first birthday is a huge milestone, and what better way to mark the occasion than with a football-themed party? Whether you're a sports enthusiast or just want a fun, unique way to celebrate your little one's big day, a football theme is a great choice. The theme "First Year Down" adds a playful twist, symbolizing your baby’s first year and all the touchdowns ahead. Here’s how you can plan a memorable “First Year Down” football-themed birthday party for your one-year-old.
1. Invitations: Game Day Ready
Set the tone for the party with game day inspired invitations. You can go for a design featuring a football, goalposts, or a cute baby in a mini football uniform. Keep the wording playful and light, like: “The first touchdown is in! Join us for [Baby’s Name]’s 1st Birthday Bash – ‘First Year Down’!”
Include details like:
Date, time, and location
A friendly note about bringing comfy clothes (because who knows how messy things might get!)
An RSVP request

2. Theme and Decorations: "First Year Down"
A football theme for a 1-year-old’s birthday doesn’t have to be overly complex—keep it simple, playful, and age-appropriate. The key is combining football imagery with the excitement of a baby’s first big milestone.
Here are some of the decorations we incorporated:
Backdrop / Balloon Display: We had a backdrop display resembling a football field with a goalpost, #1 marquee, and a football inspired balloon garland behind the kids table. If you’re in San Diego, Luxan Balloons does an amazing job at creating custom backdrop displays.

“Autographs For The Birthday Boy”: Upon entry, guests were to “autograph” a football for the birthday boy as a keepsake. We found this adorable custom football on Zazzle.
Banners & Signs: Create a custom “First Year Down” banner or signs with fun phrases like “Touchdown! [Baby’s Name] is ONE!” These can be hung on the wall or draped over the party table. We loved this 1st milestone sign from Etsy.
Football Field Table Runners: Lay down green turf-like tablecloths or mats to represent a football field. Use white painter’s tape or vinyl strips to create yard lines, or add a DIY goalpost made from PVC pipes or cardboard.
Table Decor: There’s a ton of options when it comes to incorporating a football theme to your table centerpieces. We had a lot of fun coming up with ideas but decided on a combination of white and green flower arrangements, NFL inspired cubes, footballs, and goalposts.

Photo Cubes: We used 6”x6” styrofoam cubes and added the birthday boy’s name and photos to all of the sides and then layered the top with fake grass.
Goalposts: Here are some custom goalposts we used from Etsy:
Mini Footballs: Decorate with small inflatable footballs or soft plush footballs. Scatter them around the room or hang them as part of a mobile or balloon arrangement.
3. Food & Drinks: Football-Inspired Snacks
You don’t need to go overboard with elaborate snacks, but having fun football-themed food items can make a huge impact. Just remember that food should be age-appropriate for a 1-year-old and easy for adults to enjoy too.
For the Baby:
Smash Cake: The smash cake is a must-have! Make it football-shaped or decorate it like a mini football field. Add fondant or icing details like laces on the football.
Baby-Friendly Fruit Salad: Serve a bowl of fresh fruit, cut into small, baby-friendly pieces. You can even use a football-shaped cookie cutter to create fun fruit shapes.
Mac n Cheese is also always a favorite for the kids!
For the Adults:
Sliders, Chicken Wings, Pasta Salad, Hot Dogs...
Chips & Dips: Serve up chips with guacamole, salsa, or queso—football game favorites!
Beverages: Have a selection of drinks for your adult guests, like sodas or mocktails, in themed cups. You can even provide water bottles with “First Year Down” stickers for a personalized touch. We used this template for the custom water bottle labels.
We used these adorable custom cupcake toppers for the sliders.
Desserts:
The options are endless when it comes to football inspired desserts. We had a smash cake, regular sized cake, chocolate covered strawberries, cake pops in the shape of footballs, and custom sugar cookies.
4. Activities & Entertainment: Fun for All Ages
While your one-year-old might not be throwing a touchdown pass, you can create a fun and safe environment for babies and adults to enjoy.

Soft Play & Bounce House: An absolute must for a kids birthday party! We worked with Little Ones Party Co. and they were amazing! They were able to create the cutest decal for the soft play.
Kids Table w/ Activities: Kids tables are where all the fun is at! We had “color-a-football” where the kids could decorate their own mini football, custom coloring pages, and their goodie boxes full of all types of activities. Below are some links for the activities we included.

5. Cake Time!
The centerpiece of any birthday party is the cake. For a football-themed party, you can go all out with a football field cake. You can make a rectangular cake with green icing and white lines to mimic a football field, or a 3D football-shaped cake decorated with edible laces.
Don’t forget the smash cake for your little one! A smaller football-shaped cake, decorated with the words “First Year Down,” will make the moment extra special when your baby digs in.
6. Party Favors: Touchdown Goodies
Give your little guests a small token to remember the day. We used these custom goodie boxes from Zazzle. Here are a few ideas for party favors to include in the goodie boxes:
Mini Footballs: Small, soft footballs that the kids can take home and play with.
Football-Themed Stickers: Cute stickers with football designs are a fun way to keep the theme alive.
Personalized Baby Jerseys: For a memorable keepsake, you could get custom onesies or baby t-shirts with each child’s name and “First Year Down” printed on it.
Conclusion
A football-themed birthday party for your one-year-old with the “First Year Down” theme is an exciting and playful way to celebrate your baby’s first milestone. From football field decorations to baby-friendly snacks and games, you can create a memorable day filled with joy, laughter, and plenty of touchdowns (or at least giggles). Whether your little one is already crawling toward the end zone or simply enjoying the festivities, this theme will make for an unforgettable first birthday bash. Let’s get the party rolling and make that first year a touchdown!
